Cardinal Families,

A new Missouri law requires all volunteers to have criminal background checks with fingerprinting to be allowed to volunteer with students. The fingerprint records are submitted to the Missouri State Highway Patrol and the Federal Bureau of Investigation for a search of criminal history files.

The legislation defines a volunteer as an individual who assists the district without compensation and may be periodically unsupervised while with students. This includes, but is not limited to, classroom or library helpers, field trip and activity chaperones (i.e. homecoming floats, dances, etc.), mentoring and tutoring.

In order to stay in compliance with this new legislation, the Stewartsville C-II School District has had to review our volunteer policy. All district volunteers will be required to obtain the fingerprint background check in order to continue or begin volunteer work in our school. The current rate for this background check is $41.75 (subject to change) and there are locations in St. Joseph, Cameron, Maryville and Liberty that offer this service. You can stop by the school office to pick up/submit a volunteer application and get a code specific to our district, and we will be glad to point you in the right direction. Unfortunately, we cannot accept background checks from any other organization.

We recognize that this legislation was put in place to help ensure the protection and safety of our students, and we sincerely hope that this isn’t a burden that keeps our Cardinal Community from continuing the great volunteer work you all do for our school. Our school really is blessed with the best. Thank you for your understanding as we work to stay in compliance with our current state regulations and keep our students safe. Please feel free to contact us with any questions or concerns.

Sincerely,

Chantelle Schwope
